Abstract The structure is investigated and the digital control system of a big azimuthal telescope (BTA) of special astronomical observatory of the Russian Academy of Sciences is synthesized. The principle of work, structure of electric drives, auxiliary mechanisms and the main features of control paths are described. Need and relevance of modernization of a digital control system of BTA locates. The block diagram of a control path a telescope on axes Z (zenith) is formed and the task of construction and research of discrete mathematical model of the specified control path by a telescope, and also a problem of synthesis of a discrete control system and algorithm of work of a digital control unit by a telescope on an axis Z is set. At the solution of a problem of synthesis of a digital control system the analytical method of synthesis of a control system on the set indicators of quality with application of the principle of management on an exit and influences and taking into account delay, and also conditions of physical feasibility of digital control units is applied. As a result of the solution of a problem of synthesis of a digital control system, the algorithm of calculation of discrete values of operating influence is received. Results of research of the synthesized system are given.
