Abstract It is considered a new method of orientations field calculation for image processing, based on the idea of maximization the sum of gradients inside local neighborhood. The introduction to image orientations in continuous and discrete cases is given. The algorithm of the new method is developed; the method is compared to existing methods of orientations calculation. It is shown that new method has much lower systematic inaccuracy for orientations close to verticals or horizontals. The method can be applied in tasks of fingertips analysis, image interpolation, noise filtering and object detection.
