Abstract An analysis of currently existing approaches to the study of functions on the decrease and increase, this article concludes that there is unrecoverable under this approach contradictions. As an alternative approach in the context of the fundamental nature of mathematical education of the author proposes a new concept that draws on its determination not monotone functions, and determining the points of decrease (increase) and the constant functions. Proposed tools and study design features on the decrease and increase, applicable to university and school course in mathematical analysis. Classification points of the function definition is considered as the end result of the study.
