Abstract The research findings of natural ageing effect on physicochemical and flammable properties of the wood are presented. It has been established that the change in fire characteristics during wood-work natural ageing is associated with changes in chemical composition of the wood and volume timber weight (density). Under equal thermal conditions wooden samples suffered the long-term ageing show the excessive fire resistance; and the critical burning heat flux decreases. On top of that, the wooden samples suffered the long-term ageing show the decrease in maximum mass combustion rate and total heat input during the initial period until the intense oxidization of the coal bed surface. Reduction of sprucewood smoke generation ability as a result of its 150 year-old natural ageing is due to the changes in the chemical composition of the wood, due to lignin concentration in particular. Lignin due to aromatic nature of the chemical structure carries the enhanced capability to carbonization and an nonvolatile carbon residue yield by decomposition. The toxicity analysis of sprucewood sample combustion products recording oxide and carbon dioxide output presents the toxicity reduction of timber combustion products with service life extend.
