Abstract Robotics is one of the most advanced areas of science and technology. It is an interdisciplinary field that integrates research in physics, mechanics and mechatronics, technology, mathematics, cybernetics, medicine and engages specialists from different scientific fields in an innovative process of scientific and technological development. The worldwide rapid development of robotics opens up new opportunities in many scientific areas and modern life. It plays an important role in the economics and the defence potential of our country. The article presents a brief historical overview and analysis of modern trends in development of robotics. It shows the latest and most advanced areas of development of robotic systems in Russia and in the world. The authors offer refined classification for robotic systems and make the forecast for the development of robotics in the country for an upcoming period. Federal Agency for scientific organizations (FASO Russia) develops a fundamental research program "Robotic systems". The aim is to coordinate the research on robotics for the organizations within the jurisdiction of FASO Russia. The Agency conducted the analysis of these studies, and then classified them by industry and sub-robotics. As a result, 6 areas of implementation were formed: 1. Mechanics. 2. Control Algorithms. 3. Medical Robotics. 4. Marine robotic technology. 5. Aerospace Robotics and its planetary applications. 6. Agricultural Robotics. FASO Russia plans to coordinate the future research of the organizations within its jurisdiction within these main areas.
