Abstract In automatic detection of radar signals against the background of noises of unknown and changing level widely used are the detectors with the stabilization of the false alarms frequency. They include noise automatic gain control, adjustment of the quantization threshold, detectors of contrast, sign and rank-based detectors. Proposed is a new rank test based on sum of ranks. The possibility of its use as the algorithm of single pulses detection is examined. The functional block diagram of the detector that implements the algorithm is presented. The principle of operation of range detector is briefly described. Characteristics of detection in the Gaussian approximation are analyzed. It is compared with the uniformly most powerful detection algorithm (test of Student). It is shown the loss of ranking algorithm to the Student algorithm by the threshold signal 1 dB for sample sizes of M=4; N=4, the probability of correct detection P0=0.9 and probability of false alarm PLT=8*10-3. It is made the prototype of the detector implementing a ranking algorithm. Carried out is a pilot study of the prototype. The calculated and experimental detection character-istics are presented. The difference in threshold voltage between the results of calculation and experiment is less than 0,33 dB, that confirms the correctness of the methods of calculation of detection characteristics. An experimental study of the stabilization quality of false alarms is carried out. It is shown that the change in root-mean-square error of noise by 33 times from 30 mV to 1000 mV, the probability of false alarm is increased only 10,8 times. This result is quite satisfactory for practice. Proposed rank detector of single pulses can be used in single-channel and multichannel receivers of the radio control for stabilizing the frequency of false alarms.
