Abstract The aim of the work is to study the chemical composition of the estuarine zones of the rivers of Abkhazia and reveal their influence on the pollution of the coastal water area of Abkhazia. The state of the Black sea coastal waters in the regions of large cities is greatly influenced by rainfall, which, due to the lack of centralized storm sewage and cleaning, washes off a large number of pollutants, including petroleum products, phenols, nutrients to the sea from sidewalks, roads and soil. All this leads to the fact that during a period of intensive melting of snow and rainfall, a sig-nificant amount of polluted water enters the sea, which puts pressure on the ecological systems of the sea, as a result of which the self-cleaning ability of marine waters falls. The main types of pol-lution in the water area of Abkhazia are oil products and biogenic elements. The main factors affecting the concentration of petroleum products are the following: the main Black Sea current, meteorological conditions, surface runoff, sea transport. During the summer period, the greatest pollution occurs in the water area of Abkhazia with oil products, due to their accumulation in the coastal zone. The average annual values of the concentration of petroleum products exceed the maximum permissible standards by 1,1–6,0 times. According to data received in 2011, it can be noted that the sea waters of the Gudauta shelf are also experiencing oil pollution, especially in the upper 20-meter layer (1,1–5,2 EРCs). The distribution of biogenic elements in the coastal waters of the Abkhazian water area does not exceed the maximum permissible concentration, except single cases in the summer period of time. Of all the rivers studied, the exceed of the maximum allowable rate is noted for nitrates and ammonium; the remaining pollutants are within normal limits. The most polluted are the rivers flowing through the densely populated points of the city of Sukhum and their pollution can be considered as a consequence of anthropogenic load.
