Abstract In practice, in passive sonar systems for determination of underwater and surface targets coordinates the range-difference method (RDM) is widely used. This method is based on using of differences in distances from the object to three collinear arrays with known coordinates. To de-termine the difference of distances by calculating mutually correlation functions of received noise-like signals time delays between the received signals at each array are measured. A significant shortcoming of the range-difference method is the requirement of the collinear arrangement of three receiving arrays with symmetric antenna base that is a rather difficult task when the components of the bases are hundreds of meters. Failure to comply with this requirement, the errors of the target coordinates determining increase significantly. In this connection, the practical value for the developers of sonar systems is an algorithm, which allows calculating the target coordinates for the case of non-collinear arrangement with asymmetric antenna base. The present paper presents the algorithm of target coordinates determination by RDM, taking into account the inaccuracies of receiving hydroacoustic arrays installation and obtained analytical ratios. The correctness of the algorithm is confirmed by changing the arbitrary location of arrays to their location on the same line, that is obtaining well-known expressions for classical RDM of targets coordinates determination by the analytical method from derived ratios of the above algorithm. The use of the proposed algorithm assumes the presence of a priori information about the position of the arrays, the absence of mutual movement of the array system and the target, the high accuracy of the time delays measuring, the signal from the target and the interference are uncorrelated stationary random processes. However, when implementing the method of determining targets coordinates in passive sonar systems, these conditions are not always fulfilled, and therefore the following factors, related to the propagation medium, must be taken into account: sound velocity profile, the depth and slope of the bottom, possible multiple reflections of signals from the bottom and surface of the shallow sea, and always available uncertainty of the exact position of the arrays and the uncompensated Doppler effect due to the movement of the target.
