Abstract The need to monitor the characteristics of thunderstorm activity is dictated by the increase in material damage and the number of cases of serious injuries and deaths from natural hazards accompanying thunderstorms, and the requirements for improving the safety of life, thunder and lightning protection, etc. To improve monitoring of lightning discharges, analysis systems, information technologies of visual representation and interpretation of initial measurements are required. The creation of such technologies requires a number of tasks. One of these tasks is the mathematical processing of lightning discharge monitoring data based on cluster analysis. Thus, the goal of the work was the development of methods and algorithms for the cluster-based analysis of thunderstorm information. The lightning detection network, established in the North Caucasus, started work in 2008 and continuously delivers information on the development of thunderstorm cells. Observation of the parameters of lightning discharges using a network of radar and thunderstorm seekers is a data source that is useful for detecting, tracking information about the current state of thunderstorm processes. But, even when there is no other information, the direction-finder allows you to estimate to a certain extent in real time the characteristics of the thunderstorm. The present study is devoted to the question of what kind of thunderstorms can be identified automatically and to what extent the tracking of cells based on lightning can improve the prediction of rapidly developing convective hazards. On the basis of the introduction of the system of thunderstorm direction finding in the North Caucasus, research and software has been developed to solve the problem of detection and tracking of thunderstorms. The module of lightning discharges clustering and tracking of thunderstorms is developed, which allows evaluating the contribution of certain lightning parameters for specific storm cells. Typical examples of thunderstorm processes are presented. Further improvement of the system is possible in two directions, direct methods of tracking, for example, on neural networks and mathematical modeling of dangerous weather phenomena. This will allow improving the current forecast and preparing the system for reliable practical application.
