Abstract The effect of different inorganic and organic acids of the phosphorus, and some of the organosilicon compounds on the smoke generation property of the wood was studied in order to reduce the smoke generation of the wood in the fire. The properties of the carbonized surface layer are examined by the methods of the water adsorption, IR spectroscopy and elemental analysis, and the influence of that properties on the amount of released smoke were studied as well. The wood is changed a group of materials to the medium smoke generation “D2” (according to “Technical regulations on fire safety requirements”) in the presence of diethyl phosphite, dimethyl phosphite and ammonium polyphosphate (APP-1) wood enters into. It is shown that the reduction of the smoke generation of the wood is related to the changes in the porous structure of coal, ratio of the carboxyl and hydroxyl groups, and the contents of the elemental phosphorus and silicon in the carbonized surface layer.
