Abstract The article considers the dynamic of university education in France from the foundation of the fist medieval University of Paris to our days. The Influence of political, economical, social, ideological factors on the progress of the French university education system in different historical periods is shown. The main points of the reforms carried out by the French Government are revealed. It is emphasized that the Bologna process has been driving forward the most important reforms in higher education in the modern era, and France have today made significant moves towards establishing the European Higher Education Area. The author proposes the division of the progress of the French university education into periods. The intensity of the reforms serves as a criterion of this division.
