Abstract In this paper we consider the solution of the dynamic problem of thermoelasticity for a heated to a constant temperature solid cylinder of a relatively large length and cooled rapidly in an environment of a constant temperature. With regard to the mechanics the cylinder is in the state of plane deformation, that is there is no axial deformation and cylindrical surface is free of load (radial stress is equal to zero). It is shown that even with very intensive heat transfer between the cylindrical surface and the environment when the temperature of the cylindrical surface immediately takes the temperature of the cooling medium, the dynamic effects might be neglected and the problem might be regarded as a quasi-static one. This considerably facilitates the solution of the problem.
