Abstract An opportunity to apply models of the current state estimation of cereals is considered based on several vegetation indices, which are given by various combinations of remotely sensed radiances in spectral channels of multi-spectral instruments. An assessment of these indices representation has been conducted to solve the asserted problem. The physical sense of a thematic analysis of the agricultural crops is determined by the spectral characteristics of the used data of available space surveys having in mind that vegetation in its healthy and stressed state has different features of reflectivity in green and red spectral bands due to differences in the pigment content of leaves. Examples are shown of the index approach realization to estimate the state of the cereal crops after winter using data from space for some areas of Rostov region.
