Abstract The relationship of partial discharge (PD) with the state of the electrical insulation of power cable lines (PCL). The problems of aging and failure insulation PD PCL in the field. It is noted that the registration of PD to evaluate the quality of insulation and identify local defects that are almost impossible to conventional high voltage tests or measurements of any integral characteristics of the insulation (the dielectric loss tangent, insulation resistance, etc.). It is shown that for monitoring the characteristics of PD is necessary to use MATLAB Simulink models help identify the maximum PD, the number of PD values, the contents of the PD pulse, and more. Method of calculation may be used for the simulation of aging and failure of electrical insulation. It is shown that the study of the appearance of inclusion of the aging process and achieve the ultimate state of isolation is necessary to diagnose and assess the residual life of insulation of electrical systems.
